Foolish Heart

What’s the difference between poetry and song lyrics? The following are song lyrics. Is it also a poem?

Before you turn your heart away
Listen now to what I say
’cause I’ve been holdin’ fire for you
And you won’t see my point of view

I  been workin’ in the hot sun all day
I work my fingers to the bone
To be a sparkle in your eye
But I never qualify

Before you turn your heart away
Hear me out, hear what I say
’cause I have built this shrine for you
And you won’t let me see you through

To tell you ’bout the cold December nights
The wind chilled me to the bone
Carving pillars to your life
But you don’t see things right

…..So take your foolish heart away
…..take your foolish heart away

……….Things look different in the light
……….Different from what they seem
……….I guess it’s all a crazy dream
……….‘cuz it was nothin’ like my life

Take your foolish heart away
Don’t turn back, don’t start to say
’cause I have got a job to do
I haven’t got the time for you

Workin’ in the hot sun all day
I’m breaking rocks and grinding stone
To carve you from my life
To get back to the light

….Take your foolish heart away
….Take your foolish heart away
….Take your foolish heart away
….Take your foolish heart away

This is a beautful song/poetry, very well constructed.
Hmm the diferent between songs and peotry,
in my opinion there is none its just another form of expression. both songs and poetry reflect an openion, emotion, points of view or make a statement about the character being described, the feeling being portrayed and the messages being sent. both give the writer a voice greater than that of their own, (i.e. weither or not one is a closet poet, etc.)with each word or line, it affects the audience in the various ways. both are a writers expression, protrayal, fansty, dreams, hope etc. Emotions

THANK YOU both for your comments. I believe KK is right about why people write, and about the spirit of writing. Sugar is equally right about the different meters between poetry and songwriting.

This wasn’t a test and there are no wrong answers. I just enjoy hearing other people’s opinions about stuff like this!
